2 termsA/B Testing
A/B testing is an experiment that compares two versions of a message, page or feature by showing each to a random share of the audience and measuring which performs better on a chosen metric. In email, it is used to test subject lines, copy and calls to action.
AIDA Framework
AIDA is a copywriting and marketing model that describes four stages a reader moves through before acting: Attention, Interest, Desire and Action. It is used to structure ads, landing pages and emails.

4 termsCall to Action (CTA)
A call to action (CTA) is the specific next step a message asks the reader to take, such as replying, booking a meeting or visiting a page. In cold email the CTA is usually a single question at the end of the message.
Click-Through Rate (CTR)
Click-through rate (CTR) is the percentage of recipients or viewers who click a link in an email, ad or page. In email it is usually unique clicks divided by delivered emails; a related metric, click-to-open rate, divides clicks by opens.
Cold Email
A cold email is an unsolicited, one-to-one business email sent to someone who has no prior relationship with the sender, usually to start a sales, partnership or hiring conversation. It is legal in many countries when it is relevant, honest and easy to opt out of.
Cold Outreach
Cold outreach is contacting potential customers, partners or hires who have had no prior interaction with you, using channels such as email, phone or social messages. It is the opposite of inbound, where the prospect makes the first move.
E
6 termsEmail Copywriting
Email copywriting is the craft of writing the words of an email, including the subject line, opening, body and call to action, so that the intended reader understands it quickly and takes the next step. In cold email it favors brevity, clarity and relevance over polish.
Email Personalization
Email personalization is tailoring the content of an email to its recipient, from basic merge fields like first name and company to custom lines that reference the person's role, company situation or recent events. In cold email, meaningful personalization is the main driver of replies.
Email Sequence
An email sequence is a planned series of emails sent to the same recipient over time, with each step triggered by a delay or an action. In cold outreach it usually means a first email plus several follow-ups that stop as soon as the prospect replies.
Email Signature
An email signature is the block of text at the end of an email that identifies the sender, typically with name, role, company and contact details. In cold email it also builds credibility and can carry required legal details such as a postal address.
Email Template
An email template is a reusable, pre-written email with fixed text and placeholders that are filled in for each recipient. Templates speed up writing but, if used unchanged at scale, produce identical messages that readers and filters recognize.
Email Thread
An email thread is a group of related messages, such as an original email and its replies and follow-ups, that email clients display together as one conversation. Threads are built from the Message-ID, In-Reply-To and References headers and, in some clients, the subject line.

2 termsIcebreaker
In cold email, an icebreaker is the personalized opening line that shows the recipient the message was written for them, usually by referencing something specific about their company, role or recent activity. Its job is to earn a few more seconds of attention.
Interest-Based CTA
An interest-based CTA is a low-commitment closing question that asks whether the recipient is interested in a topic, rather than asking for a meeting straight away. A typical example is "Is this worth exploring?" or "Open to hearing more?"
M
2 termsMerge Tag
A merge tag is a placeholder in an email template, such as a first-name or company field, that the sending system replaces with each recipient's data when the message is sent. Merge tags are the simplest form of email personalization.
Multichannel Outreach
Multichannel outreach is contacting prospects through more than one channel, such as email, phone, social networks and events, as part of one coordinated plan. The goal is to reach buyers where they respond best without repeating the same message everywhere.
O
3 termsObjection Handling
Objection handling is how a seller responds when a prospect raises a reason not to move forward, such as price, timing, an existing vendor or lack of need. The goal is to understand the concern and address it honestly, not to argue the prospect out of it.
Open Rate
Open rate is the percentage of delivered emails that recipients open, usually measured with a tiny tracking image that loads when the email is viewed. Privacy features such as Apple Mail Privacy Protection have made it an unreliable metric since 2021.
Outreach Cadence
An outreach cadence is the schedule of touches used to contact a prospect: how many messages, on which channels, in what order and with what gaps between them. It turns ad-hoc follow-up into a repeatable process.
P
5 termsPain Point
A pain point is a specific, recurring problem that a prospect or customer experiences and would pay to solve, such as wasted time, lost revenue, risk or frustration. In sales messaging, naming the right pain point is what makes an offer feel relevant.
PAS Framework
PAS, short for Problem-Agitate-Solve, is a copywriting framework that names a problem the reader has, makes its consequences vivid and then presents a solution. It is widely used for short sales messages, including cold emails.
Plain-Text Email
A plain-text email is a message sent as simple text with no HTML formatting, images or design elements, using the text/plain media type. For cold outreach it is the default choice because it looks like normal one-to-one mail.
Positive Reply Rate
Positive reply rate is the percentage of delivered outreach emails that receive an interested or constructive reply, such as a request for more information or agreement to meet. It filters out negative replies, auto-replies and opt-outs to show real demand.
Preview Text
Preview text, also called preheader text, is the snippet of an email that inbox apps show next to or below the subject line before the message is opened. It is either taken from the first lines of the body or set as hidden text at the top of the email.
R
2 termsReferral Ask
A referral ask is a request for an introduction or a pointer to someone else, either to the right person inside a prospect's company or to another company that might benefit. It turns a contact who cannot buy into a path to someone who can.
Reply Rate
Reply rate is the percentage of delivered outreach emails that receive a reply from the recipient. It is the primary performance metric for cold email because replies, unlike opens, are a reliable sign that a real person read and engaged with the message.
S
4 termsSender Persona
A sender persona is the identity an outreach email comes from: the person's name, role, tone and signature as the recipient sees them. It should be a real person who can answer replies, because the From line must accurately identify the sender.
Social Proof
Social proof is evidence that other people or companies use, trust or benefit from a product, such as customer names, results, testimonials or reviews. It works because people look to others' choices when deciding under uncertainty.
Spam Trigger Words
Spam trigger words are words and phrases, such as "free money" or "act now", that are common in spam and may make recipients or filters more suspicious of an email. Modern filters weigh them far less than authentication, reputation and engagement.
Subject Line
The subject line is the short line of text shown in the inbox before an email is opened, carried in the message's Subject header. In cold email it has two jobs: earn the open and set an honest expectation of what the email contains.
