Partnership Outreach

Partnership outreach is contacting other companies to propose a mutually beneficial relationship, such as an integration, co-marketing campaign, referral or reseller agreement, rather than selling them a product. It aims to reach a shared audience through a trusted partner.

In short

Partnership outreach pitches a shared win to another company instead of a sale, so the ask must be about their benefit.

Key points

  1. Common B2B partnership types are technology integrations, co-marketing, referral or affiliate programs and resellers [2][5].
  2. A strategic alliance is an agreement between companies to pursue shared goals while staying independent [1].
  3. The best targets serve the same Ideal Customer Profile (ICP) with a complementary, non-competing product.
  4. Outreach should lead with the partner's benefit, such as new revenue, a better product for their users or shared audience [2].
  5. Partnership emails are still commercial email, so CAN-SPAM rules on honest headers and opt-out apply [4].

Types of partnerships

B2B partnerships range from light to deep. Co-marketing is the simplest: two companies promote a webinar, guide or offer together, sharing the work, the cost and each other's audience [2]. Referral and affiliate programs pay a partner, often a commission, for sending customers, and the FTC expects affiliates to disclose that financial relationship when they recommend a product [5]. Technology partnerships connect two products through an integration, which gives both companies a reason to recommend each other. Resellers and agencies sell or implement the product for their own clients. Larger agreements look like a strategic alliance, where each company keeps its independence but commits resources to shared goals [1]. As the relationship grows, many software companies use partner relationship management tools to track deals, leads and payouts across partners. Deeper alliances are hard to get right: Harvard Business Review research put their failure rate at 60 to 70 percent, despite plenty of advice on how to manage them [3].

Finding and approaching partners

Good partners share your customers but not your product. Start from your Ideal Customer Profile (ICP) and list the other tools, services and communities those buyers already use; overlap without competition is the signal. Then research each candidate: their audience size, existing integrations and whether they already run a partner program. The first email should be short and specific. It should say who you are, what audience you share, and one concrete idea that benefits them, such as an integration their customers have asked for or a joint piece of content [2]. Personalization matters even more than in sales outreach, because partnership managers receive many generic proposals. A clear, low-effort Call to Action (CTA), such as a short call to test fit, tends to work better than a detailed contract proposal.

Rules and good practice

Partnership emails are commercial messages, so the same rules apply as for any Cold Email. Under the CAN-SPAM Act, messages must not use misleading headers or subject lines, must include a valid physical postal address and must honor opt-out requests within 10 business days, and the law applies to business-to-business email as well [4]. In the EU and UK, contacting named individuals involves Personal Data, so a documented Legitimate Interest basis is usually needed. Good practice goes beyond compliance. Follow up once or twice, not endlessly; keep an email thread so context stays together; and measure results by partner-sourced pipeline, not by the number of signed agreements. A few active partners are worth more than many dormant ones.
