Firmographics

Firmographics are descriptive attributes of a company, such as industry, employee count, revenue, location, ownership and age, used to segment organizations in B2B marketing and sales the way demographics segment individual consumers.

In short

Firmographics are the basic facts about a company that tell you whether it fits your target market.

Key points

  1. Wikipedia describes firmographics as characteristics used to segment prospective organizations, analogous to demographics for people [1].
  2. Common fields are industry, headcount, revenue band, headquarters location, number of locations, legal structure and funding stage [2][3].
  3. Industry is often coded with standard systems such as NAICS, the North American Industry Classification System developed by the statistical agencies of Canada, Mexico and the United States [4].
  4. Firmographics are the backbone of an Ideal Customer Profile (ICP) and of Total Addressable Market (TAM) sizing.
  5. They are usually combined with Technographics and Intent Data for a fuller picture of fit and timing.
  6. Firmographic data changes as companies grow or shrink, so it is subject to Data Decay and needs periodic Lead Enrichment.

Common firmographic attributes

The most widely used firmographics are industry or vertical, employee count, annual revenue, location, and company type, such as private, public or nonprofit. B2B software teams often add funding stage, year founded and growth rate, because a seed-stage Startup and a mature enterprise buy very differently. HubSpot's guidance lists similar fields and stresses using them to focus marketing on the segments that convert [2]. Mailchimp describes firmographic data as the B2B counterpart of demographic data and recommends it for segmenting campaigns [3]. For industry, standard codes such as NAICS avoid ambiguity; NAICS uses a hierarchical six-digit system shared by the United States, Canada and Mexico [4].

Using firmographics in prospecting

Firmographics turn a vague target into a filter. An Ideal Customer Profile (ICP) might specify B2B software companies with 20 to 200 employees in North America, which immediately defines a Serviceable Addressable Market (SAM) and a starting Lead List. The same fields drive Lead Scoring, where a match adds points and a mismatch subtracts them, and Disqualification, where some values rule a company out entirely. Firmographics also help Email Personalization, because a message to a 15-person team should read differently from one to a 500-person company. Segmenting by firmographics and comparing Reply Rate between segments is one of the fastest ways to learn which part of the market responds best [1].

Data quality and limits

Firmographic data comes from company filings, websites, self-reported profiles and data vendors, and it is often inconsistent. Employee counts differ by source, revenue for private companies is usually an estimate, and industry labels are applied unevenly. Records also age: companies hire, shrink, move and get acquired, so a list that was accurate last year may not be today, which is the core of Data Decay. Treat firmographics as good enough for segmentation rather than as exact facts, and verify critical attributes before relying on them for Account-Based Marketing (ABM) decisions [2]. Pairing firmographics with Technographics and recent buying signals gives a much stronger picture than company size and industry alone [3].
